Why is this man trying to ruin my self esteem?!

Question: Why is this man trying to ruin my self esteem?
I asked a colleague out and he said no, then over the next month he would constantly criticise my clothes to me, telling me that I only wear black (it's an office) that I need a make over and so on. It's fine if he feels that way, but I feel he could just keep it to himself. Then he said to me that I need to wear more high heels and sexy dresses. I feel so bad about myself now as I always thought I dressed nicely.

He comes by my cubicle under the guise of talking to me, but just ends up criticising me.

Answers:

Truthfully, he probably regrets turning you down and he's trying to convince himself he's made the right decision. He probably feels remorseful about it but now all he can do is make excuses for why he didn't say yes. He'll probably keep doing it too until he sees you with someone better looking or a better dresser than him and wonders why he was such an asshole to you.
Either way, don't let it get to you, he sounds sooooo not worth your time:)

There are laws that govern the work place and other situations. His behavior and comments are illegal and harassment. They are meant to demean you.
He can be held accountable for them, and you should get an employment attorney and keep records or record his comments for evidence.
People who do this are tying to control others and bring them down to their level so they can feel better about themselves. Sometimes they are sadistic people.
He sounds like he knows he can 'get to' you and is having a good time bringing you down.

Doesn't matter why. If you've told him to stop, and he hasn't, then this needs to be brought to the attention of management.

he has low self-esteem himself
