How can I get myself to sleep?!

Question: How can I get myself to sleep?
I can never sleep. It has to do with anxiety BIG TIME. It's getting really irrating! I take advil PM and STILL don't sleep. The only time I can usually sleep is if I smoke weed, but I'm not going to smoke weed every night. I'm not that stupid. What can I do to try and sleep normal?

Answers:

Stay away from caffeine after afternoon. Also try melatonin (over the counter, natural sleep aid) Also, sleepytime tea is really helpful.

Maybe you need to talk to a doctor about anti anxiety medicine.

Go see a doctor, sleep is so important.

You may hate to hear this, but marijuana can cause anxiety, and if you take any drug for anxiety, including cannabis, when it wears off, the anxiety will return. Try going without marijuana for a month and see what happens. Meanwhile, don't take Advil PM. It's a combination drug and only one ingredient helps you sleep. It's dyphenhydramine, aka Benadryl. Buy the generic if you use it. You can take up to 100mg. More than that will keep you up. You can also try doxyalamine succinate.. I think the brand name is Unisom, but there are plenty of generics. They are little blue diamond shaped pills. You can take up to two at once. It's the antihistamine in NyQuil. By the way, don't take NyQuil for sleep. It's a blend of ingredients.

Melatonin usually works better at lower doses, like one milligram. Don't get the 3mg pills, because too much melatonin keeps you awake. Chamomile or Celestial Seasonings' Tension Tamer or Sleepytime teas help. Also, you should cut out caffeine or other stimulants altogether. If you're on ADHD drugs, well, there's your problem.

Ritualize you bedtime. Go to bed at the same time every day. Brush your teeth, wash your face, listen to a relaxing song, turn off all electronics, and don't get into bed unless you're tired.

If you need to go to a doctor for sleep medication, know that there is a large number of medications that doctors can prescribe for sleep, and some of them are dangerous. If you get medicine, ask if it is a controlled substance. If it is, avoid it, since you can become dependent on it and not be able to sleep without it. Ask if it is an antipsychotic. I know it's weird, but some docs prescribe antipsychotics like Seroquel for sleep. Don't take this stuff. Its side effects can be so bad it's only for actual psychotics.

Here are some worth considering:

Vistaril (antihistamine)

Chloral hydrate, which is a controlled substance, but it's pretty hard to get addicted to. Chloral hydrate addiction was rampant in the latter part of the 19th century, but no doctor would give you enough to get addicted. It's quick acting, with no hangover.

Clonidine, an alpha blocker, meaning it blocks adrenaline. It's mostly used as a blood pressure medication.

Valerian, available as an herbal supplement which smells like feet.

Phenergan, an antihistamine and anti-nausea drug.

Trazodone, an old antidepressant.

Amitryptaline, an old tricyclic antidepressant.

Hope this helps.
