Am I allergic to mushrooms?!

Question: Am I allergic to mushrooms?
When I was little (like 5-7) I ate mushroom soup at an asian restaurant. And something happen, I don't exactly remember. I think my mouth started to swell. So for years I thought I was allergic to mushrooms. But now I wasn't sure if I was actually allergic to them, or if I just told my parents that so I wouldn't have to eat them.

Anyway. I just ate a piece of pizza with mushrooms on it. And my lips immediately started to swell. Especially my bottom lip. I'm also starting to have a tingling sensation in my throat/mouth. But there are no visible rashes or anything. I don't seem to be having the typical symptoms of a mushroom allergy. Am I allergic? Or is it all psychological?

Answers:

Sounds like an allergy to me! Be careful.. Allergies are usually progressive, meaning each time the allergen is introduced the reaction gets worse. I recommend staying away from mushrooms.

your probly allergic. shedual an appointment with your doctor for an allergy test to be sure.

If your lips are swelling and your mouth and throat are tingling, you need medical attention. Get to an A&E as quick as you like.

It sounds like an anaphylactic reactiuon which is serious and can be deadly

If you have a food allergy to mushrooms, you would experience a constellation of symptoms within 15 to 30 minutes after eating them. Symptoms may include some or all of the following: hives, itching, soft tissue swelling of the lips, tongue or throat, respiratory symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, dizziness and in extreme cases loss of consciousness due to vascular collapse (anaphylaxis). These reactions would occur relatively quickly each time you ate mushrooms whereas a viral syndrome would be an isolated event and not be reproducible. Another possibility is that you could have a food intolerance where gastrointestinal symptoms occur after eating mushrooms; the mechanism for this reaction is not due to specific allergic antibodies being produced in response to mushrooms. If you are unsure, you should see an allergist experienced in the evaluation and treatment of food allergy. They can determine whether you are truly sensitized to mushrooms and if you should avoid them in the future. If you did have a severe allergic reaction, you should carry with you an epinephrine injector in the event you inadvertently come in contact with mushrooms and have a severe reaction. This isn't necessary if you aren't sensitized (allergic) to mushrooms.
