Would this be okay? Please any advice?!

Question: Would this be okay? Please any advice?
I suffer from depression. Sometimes I have okay days though the past couple of months I have relapsed into a very low state of mind. My doctor has prescribed me anti-depressants in the past year which I still have in my medicine cabinet and never taken.
Would it be okay for me to take these now even though they were prescribed a while ago? I feel I need them now the most and I hate going to the doctors as I feel I am being patronised and can't afford to be signed off work with a sick note. I am suffering with terrible mood swings, very lonely, no motivation, anxiety even more than usual, etc.

Answers:

No it would not be okay. Many things could have changed by then. Taking them now could make you very sick. I tried doing this as well and got extremely emotional, suicidal, and had horrible head aches. After seeing a doc and telling her what I did I am no longer allowed to take that medicine.

Also if you start it and say it does work and you are okay, what happens when you run out? You will go through wicked withdrawal symptoms and not be able to function for a few weeks. Nausea, headaches, dizzyness, diareah, and more.

Its best to just go to the doctor, tell her/him you want to start, and let them know you have this MG of this medication already at home. They will tell you if its safe and how to start. Some medicine require breaking in half for the first few days to get used to it, and special dosing instructions. Good luck and feel better.

my years and years of medication taking.

check if theres an experation date or anything on the bottle/container, if not then go for it i guess, if they were prescribed they're ment for you to take em so may as well if you feel you should, try music, playing it singing or just listening, that usually hells with depression. hope you feel better

Different medicines have different shelf lives before they break down but it will also depend on the date of manufacture and how well they have been stored. Light and warmth will break them down sooner.

If the meds have been dispensed in a bottle of loose pills/capsules then there is no way to check the dates and they should be returned to the pharmacist for destruction. If there is a manufacturers box with the meds in foil blister packs there will be a use by date on there. It would be much better to see the doctor again and tell them they have not taken the pills. I can't imagine why the doc didn't ask them to come back in again to check if the tablets were helping - very remiss of them, especially with depression which can be potentially serious. There needs to be some follow up period with new prescriptions to follow.

No matter how many there currently are stored I assume there is only 1 course and therefore more pills will be required. Anti depressants don't normally cure everything in one or 2 months worth of treatment, it takes several weeks to take effect in the first place and most people need at least 6 months treatment, or a year. Starting and stopping again will only make things worse.
