Anxiety Attacks? How to help?!

Question: Anxiety Attacks? How to help?
I have been a long time sufferer of Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), and just recently, my symptoms began changing. Within the past week, I've had 2 actual panic attacks. About an hour ago, I was laying down in my bed when all of the sudden I started to hear things in echoes, then my heart just took off. I ran outside and the cold must have calmed me down. 1 hour has flown by like nothing, and now I just have an extremely dry mouth and a headache (which has gone away, too).

What could cause the change from normal GAD symptoms to these? I'm a 21 year old college student.

Answers:

"Suppose the fire alarm goes off in your home. You race around frantically to find the fire. Instead, you find that there is no fire--the alarm just isn't working properly.

It's the same with anxiety disorders. Your body mistakenly triggers your alarm system when there is no danger. This may be due to a chemical imbalance in your body. It may also be related to an unconscious memory, to a side effect of a medicine or to an illness."

Hi! My fiance has Generalized Anxiety Disorder and panic attacks. He takes medication in emergencies (when he can't control the symptoms of his panic attacks) I suggested he go to therapy to learn techniques to calm himself down so that he doesn't have to live on drugs. Anxiety disorder drugs tend to make people very monotone and sometimes don't solve the real problem, just cover it up. I think it should only be used in extreme incidents.

Here are some of the things he's learned: (maybe you can Google some of it or talk to a therapist)

*how to calm himself by breathing techniques
*recognizing triggers
*controlling worry
*control fear by telling himself the facts such as:

- Panic attacks cannot cause heart attacks
- No one has ever died from a panic attack
- Panic attacks do not cause fainting
- I am not going crazy

*talking it out
*finding other ways to deal with the feelings (listen to music, take a walk, etc.)
*avoiding caffiene
*confronting and getting over phobias

dear college student, you need to learn how to breath, and relax. It can take months of practice but i have seen it happen some faster than others. breath in Thur your nose and exhale Thur your mouth do this slowly about a good 5 times, learn how to expand your chest muscles when you inhale, often people forget how to breath,we are out and about but when we do not breath correctly we feel anxiety well up in our brain and we panic, them sweat and feel flushed to severe bout's of dizziness and confusion.Every time that you are going to leave your home take 5 minutes to do the above exercise and you may need medication but,i suggest that you do these and then you will be able to do it any where, and not panic. Its real and you can overcome this, you truly can.you SOUND like a smart person and i wish you the best and may you overcome this like a winner.you will find that this is easier said than done.try it.you will find that this will help you before a exam,a troubled sleep,an interview.

I worked as a counselor, and i used this for all my clients that suffered with high anxiety traits and i can gladly write that it worked EVERY" time.

hey buddy im 20 years old and i have the same problem. people who never had panic attacks dont understand how bad they are. i had back surgery last year and id rather go through that horrible pain again than have a panic attack. most of the meds have terrible side effects but the ssri's like paxil helped me for a while, just the side effects really get to ya. i still have real bad anxiety so i know exactly what your sayin. the best meds i found for bad anxiety and panic attacks are xanax and klonopin. xanax is the best thing ever for it. they kick in real fast and calm you down. i would say head up to the doc and ask them, its a life saver. if your getting a little stressed out from school that would make it worse, its all related but really get some xanax, just dont take it like crazy because you will get addicted to it. just take it as needed, it only takes like .50mg of it to work. if you have a big test of something and feel like you goin to freak out take one before and you be ok. they will mess u up a little but its better than a panic attack any day. good luck.
