Answers:

First of all let me start by saying we almost all do this at times. That is think someone else is talking about us when they are almost always not. I had this issue from the age of 15 to around 17 and at times I still think that way, depending on my state. However, with that said.. you (and me) are usually not that important. That's to say usually we are not being talked about because were not movie stars, rich, famous or on the other hand totally repulsive. High school years for girls or even guys for that matter can be pretty catty years for some. it comes down to having a self esteem problem. That is you feel like you are not important enough, so when someone laughs you assume it maybe about you. Because secretly you are yelling out for approval.

Get to know yourself better, take time to relax and unwind in your own skin. In time if you can do what I stated previous you will learn to be a very social, interactive even more fun person and the feeling that people are talking about you will be nothing but a dream.

It's called being a gossip. Don't worry, it lures everyone in.

Get over your self. It's drama.

You could be responding to an issue that faces many of us, low self esteem.
This is very common, and if you really spend some time with a therapist , esp since your friends have now confronted you about the issue, meaning it is interfering with your personal and social life.
It appears that you have low self-esteem, possibly related to a fear of rejection and/or abandonment.
Here are some sage words to live by while you dial up that therapist!
(these are from the article listed below)
1. "Believe that you can take care of yourself. Being too dependent on what others think can cause fear of rejection"

2."Define your self-image in terms that are based on interpersonal qualities rather than external opinion"~ Are you kind to others? Do you do volunteer work? Do you have a lot of patience? These are attributes, believe me, that are life long in nature,.

3.View rejection as opportunity. You can control certain aspects of your appearance, your behavior and your intelligence. Look at rejection as constructive criticism and incorporate the cause of the rejection into a plan to evolve.

4.Reward yourself for trying. The more you handle rejection, the easier it gets to approach a situation where you may be rejected and the closer you are to overcoming this fear.

5.Set a goal to get (five) rejections. You may get a positive response or you may gain experience in surviving a rejection. You need to reward yourself for the effort and focus.

You are quite right, you cannot just "stop caring" about what others are saying, or doing, behind your back. Chances are, as people who caer for me always tell me "You are NOT that important!" This simply means that we always think the conversation is about US, or the teacher is talking about US, etc etc.
MOST of the time, they are not!
IF people you truly care about ARE talking g about you, then it is time to step up op to the plate and find some new friends if they are that shallow that they cannot confront you face to face!!!!
Good luck, and do let me know how it works out!
