Is Zoloft and/or Paxil causing my dizziness?!

Question: Is Zoloft and/or Paxil causing my dizziness?
I was on Paxil (25 mg) for about 4 months for social anxiety. I never had any side effects, but I didn't notice a difference in the anxiety so my doctor put me on Zoloft (50mg) starting 12 days ago. For the first 10 days of taking Zoloft I was still on 12.5 mg of Paxil so that I could be weaned off of it, instead of just going off of it immediately.

I wasn't having any problems until yesterday, when I started feeling dizzy. Then I woke up this morning feeling even dizzier, plus I have a headache and feel nauseous.

I don't have any other medical issues, so I'm just assuming this is caused by the medication (though I'm aware this could all be caused by a number of things). But is this most likely a side effect of going ON Zoloft, or coming OFF of Paxil? And would it be safe to quit taking the Zoloft for now, until I can see my doctor next week?

Answers:

Hello,

Please dont stop taking your medication without consulting your doctor. Contact them and tell them about your symptoms and see what they say.

To be honest, your symptoms sound to me like an inner ear or sinus infection. You dont have to have an earache to get this. But the description of vertigo (dizziness) with headache and nausea describe it perfectly. I have had it many times, and its really unpleasant.

It's most likely a side effect of the Zoloft...I had the same problem for awhile, but it eventually went away. You should stay on the medicine, the side effect shouldn't last long, though it may come back once in a while, it's nothing serious. If you really think it's an issue, you can choose to stop the medicine, but you should be fine.

Firstly, NEVER stop taking a medication without your doctor telling you it is okay. Secondly, it could be withdrawal from the paxil (maybe you went off too fast) or it could be the Zoloft, but your doctor needs to be in charge of when/how you take your meds. Make an appt. as soon as you can, but don't stop suddenly- withdrawal from Zoloft can cause suicidal thoughts if not done properly.

as kristen said do not do anything until you see your dr next week you could even phone him on monday but don't just stop medications
it could be either coming of one med or the new medication

best wishes
