Why do anti-psychotics cause weight gain in people?!

Question: Why do anti-psychotics cause weight gain in people?
I'm realy trying to lose weight and am being succesful so far despite being on 3 psych meds. However my doc is going to be increasing my medicine Tuesday. I'm kinda nervous because I know itll probably leave me drowsy for the first couple weeks as I get used to it but I'm worried it will halt my weight loss. I am on Pristiq, Trileptal, and Invega and Diganosed Bipolar. The invega will probably be increased to 6mg, but I cant say for sure. I know the highest they make it is 12mg but I doubt he'll up me that high yet.

Answers:

Certain antipsychotics contribute to weight gain because they increase appetite and cause your body to crave unhealthy foods. It can also throw off your sodium levels, resulting in bloating

From mental health point of view, I think you should take proper guidance again from your family doctor. Also take your parents or some near and dear friends or relatives into confidence about your health. Take medicines only as per prescriptions given by a qualified doctor periodically. Wish you good luck and happy times back. God speed.

They don't cause weight gain. They increase appetite so if you're eating more, that's the cause of the weight gain.
