Being a teenager is sometimes an awkward stage in our lives. Hormonal changes are occurring and that affects our moods. Also, it is a time of life between childhood and adulthood, and there are many pressures around us that cause stress.

Being intelligent is of course a blessing. Intelligence leads us to ponder life issues, spiritual and philosophical ideas. Realizing the realities of life can cause us to feel sad. You are becoming more aware of life.

We all have the need to share our thoughts and emotions with others. Try to find a trusted friend or a trusted adult that you can share your thoughts with. I don't think that feeling sad sometimes and happy other times is a sign of being bipolar. In the course of a day, I experience an array of different emotions, and so do others. It's a good feeling to share with others, because you often find out that you are not the only one feeling shy, or self conscious, or worried about being normal. Feeling shy is part of feeling self conscious, feeling like you might be different. It's surprising to find out that many people feel exactly like you do.

If you like to read, seek books that are about coming of age, about life, about philosophy, about what it's like to be a teenager. Appreciate every happy moment you experience. Even sadness can lead us to discovering meaningful things about life.

Look up the symptoms of depression and if you think you are experiencing depression, then seek medical attention. I hear your concerns about mental illness, but from the information you have given, it doesn't sound like you are ill, but experiencing the state of being an intelligent teenager.

First off you need to see your mental health doctor. Only they can properly diagnose you. Not to sound cold or anything. If by some chance you are bi polar then there are plenty of medications out there that help you live a perfectly normal life. Just take my advice and don't stop taking them if you either feel fine that day or if you think they aren't working. Some medications take time to build up in your system and work properly. Good luck.

Sounds like you are worrying for nothing. Depression is normal for your age group. Make goals everyday and try to accomplish them. Don't let family history get you down, it can skip a generation or two.

I hate to say it, but it does sound like you have some sort of disorder. NOT TRYING TO BE MEAN. Or you can be just facing teen stress.. im 13, beginner teen yet i feel very happy or sad a lot.. mostly sad.

First of all, Bipolar Disorder is a lot more serious than just mood swings. It involves self-destructive and manic behavior. It sounds to me like you are just experiencing common teenage angst. I know it can seem a lot more serious, but it will pass, no matter how permanent it feels. Be happy that you are as smart as you are. Two years ahead? Wow, I'm jealous. I know it's hard to be the young one amongst older kids, I have experience with that, but don't despair. That may be where your shyness stems from. It's hard to be open when you feel like you don't belong. Try not to read to much into things. If you are truly worried and there is more to the story than you have let on, consult your doctor. If he assures you there is nothing to worry about, try to let it go. You will only cause yourself more troubles if you obsess over it. In the mean time, keep your head up high, and don't be afraid to indulge in the things that make you happy. :)
