Afraid of post traumatic stress?!

Question: Afraid of post traumatic stress?
Hi,
In a near future I want to join the Canadian Forces as a reservist. I'd like to give a try for Special Forces ''reserves'' ( There's JTF2, the elite, and CSOR the one behind ). But I read plenty of stuff about post traumatic event and I'm asking myself a ton of questions. I don't want to turn paranoiac or something like that. Do you have any statistics about post traumatic stress ? Even tho in the US Marines ? I'm only 16 and I feel nervous about it, is it normal ? Am I crazy or are the others normal ? Thanks to all answers !

Well, it seems you understand that combat isn't glamorous and that you'll see some pretty bad stuff. I'd say you could probably take some psychological testing to determine your susceptibility to PTSD. PTSD is a living nightmare. It makes you intensely paranoid, and you relive everything in excruciating detail. It often leads to substance abuse problems. The nightmares can leave you afraid to sleep. Military training does help prevent it a bit, I think, by dehumanizing the "enemy." Take care.

I have PTSD.

Post-traumatic stress seems to me a natural reaction to some of the things you may have to witness while serving in the army. Whether it will happen to you depends largely on your nature. If you're not too fussed about blowing the **** out of men, women and children, or possibly seeing your army buddies taking shots or losing limbs to roadside bombs (or feel you're strong enough to handle it), then you might not suffer from PTS.

Basically, get a good idea of what you're getting yourself in for, and if you're cool with it you might be fine. Read some books on PTS, I'm sure there's good info out there.

It eventually goes away... if you do get and get help and see a shrink
