Why don't parents want to understand?!

Question: Why don't parents want to understand?
Usually, when I talk to my parents about courses for school, they would say that they don't understand the system of course selection. I have tried to explain to them about the system in different ways, but they still don't understand. Is it because they don't understand because they don't WANT to understand? Why don't parents want to understand and what can I do to help?

Educated answers are appreciated.

Answers:

totally agree! i thought it was cool my parents didn't care about my school life, i could get in trouble (but that wasn't me) and they didn't care. however if i did well and got praise (another system of school) they didn't really get it, and the fact the never went to parents evening didn't bother me, but it just felt they never supported me. Furthermore, now i am at college, i am completely on my own, they get letters addressed to them and refuse to read them...as they don't understand, it drives me up the wall. YES i think they do not want to understand as it is useless to them, it doesn't involve them, i see other peoples parents telling them what courses would be best... but then again their parents did go to university! it's messed up, all in all parents are bright people, very wise but i think they don't like the school system from back in there days so refuse to get involved... !

I don't understand why some parents don't want to understand because I was very involved in my kids eduction and choices in life. Is it possible they feel threatened by you being cleverer than they are? Did they do badly at school and not want you to show them up? The opposite could also be the case, they are very clever and they worry that you're a long way behind them?

Ask a member of school staff to get involved who may be able to engage with your rents. Do you have any close female relatives like an aunt who can step in? What about a friend's mum? You need that support for your future success so do what you need to to get the help.

Have you tried explaining the system to them? I remember when my kids would ask me questions about school work and I would sometimes be embarrassed that I didn't know the answer. It wasn't appropriate of me but I would change the subject or pretend not to be interested. They succeeded, despite my failure.
