Terrified to take Fluoxetine?!

Question: Terrified to take Fluoxetine?
About a week ago, my doctor prescribed me 20mg Fluoxetine to treat my depression. Now, me being the idiot that I am, I went onto Google straight away and searched all the side effects and things, and apparently nausea is one of the most commonly reported. I have a SEVERE phobia of feeling nauseous and throwing up, so I really don't know what to do about this. I know that even though many people have reported this as a severe side effect, I may not experience it myself, but I'm not sure I want to take the risk. I was just wondering how many people on here who take Fluoxetine have experienced nausea. I'm actually terrified. I can deal with the other commonly reported side effects like diarrhea and insomnia, it's just the nausea that's got me spooked.

Before you answer, please note that Prozac and Fluoxetine are not the same thing. Prozac is a brand-name and the side effects are often different than those of the generic Fluoxetine. I've also read that they can be worse.

So if you're taking, or have taken, generic Fluoxetine, please let me know if you've suffered any side effects. I just need peace of mind before I start pumping my body full of drugs that may do me more harm than good in terms of panic-attacks and things.

Answers:

I take fluoxetine and I had no real problems with it. I have taken it now for about four years or so. The pros really outweigh the cons. At first you may have some side affects, but they go away with time as you get use to them. I have never experienced nausea as a side affect.

my sister has taken Fluoxetine for the last year with no side effects... give it a go! Good luck! If you're really that worried, go back to your doctor. Might not be worth the worry of nausea etc but that's for you to decide. You know yourself best....

i was on the highest dosage of fluoxetine and suffered no nausea or any side effects.

I have been all kinds of various meds since 1992..can't remember if I ever took that one. But there are alternatives to meds which I could highly recommend from personal experience or you could use the alternative medicine as an adjunct to conventional drug therapy..do both perhaps. What I have found useful is acupuncture for my depression. They can work on healing 2 or 3 ailments at once with a good acupuncturist. Say your digestion, anxiety or healing your heart. Seriously it works!! If you are gonna go alternative start by researching natural methods. I highly recommend you learn how to meditate. I've been working at that for 40 years..ALL cures begin and end in our being separated from our true selves and Oneness with God. Good luck question is do you believe in God or a higher power? if so then put yourself on a prayer list also.

what side effects YOU will get will depend on YOU... what someone else gets is irrelevant. you may feel slight nausea initially, (I did) but its not intolerable and it wears off.... THATs why you have to start on a low dose and increase gradually. you can't KNOW if you will get side effects or not. some people don't get any. you have to take them and then see. IF you get side effects they tend to be mild and manageable. what's worse, your depression or possibly a few mild side effects INITIALLY? why did you bother seeing you GP and getting the prescription if you were going to refuse to take them?

Do yourself a big favour. Watch the video series below and then buy The Mood Cure by Julia Ross. Psychiatric symptoms are the product of biochemical problems in the brain and not a shortage of Fluoxetine. Medicine has its place but it is down the list from providing the brain with the nutrients to heal. A couple of months from now you are going to thank me.....and your welcome :)
