I'm always tired. It's like my body never fully wakes up. Could it be !

Question: I'm always tired. It's like my body never fully wakes up. Could it be A.D.D.?
Okay, sorry that I keep posting this question but I keep forgetting things.

People tell me it could be depression. And I agree that I am depressed but that is because I am always tired and have no motivation for anything. I've always been like this and now I'm 22 and it's just becoming too much. I can't get through anything. School, work, you name it. I'm just a lazy bum. I'm just always tired. I sleep about 10 hours a night.

My doctor has me on Adderall now and it seems to be a real big help. I take 10mg XR in the am and 10mg IR in the afternoon. My body doesn't feel tired like always. I'm alert and awake like a normal person.

I don't feel right taking it if I don't have A.D.D. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Also, I'm 5'9 and 150. I'm not diabetic or overweight. In addition, I've been tested for all my thyroid levels and vitamin D and all that. It turned out fine..

IN ADDITION, I've been on anti-depressants. Like 3 different kinds, but they didn't work...cause umm, I'm not depressed.

I used to work out all summer until school started, and even then, I had to push myself to the max to do it. It didn't help with anything. I was still exhausted even after sleeping all day. I don't get it.

Before I was prescribed Adderall, I would have to drink like 3 red bulls in order to "wake up". And no, I'm not tired because I crash from the energy drinks. I drink the energy drinks because I'm always tired. People think it's the other way around.

Anyway sorry for the repost.

Answers:

Being tired is not a symptom of ADD as far as I've ever heard. ADD is 'attention deficit disorder' - which basically means you're not geared for sitting in a classroom and being quiet like all the farmer-types. It's not really a true disorder, just a label for a personality type that doesn't fit in these days - in the past, those with ADD would have been the explorers, the hunters, the trappers - the ones who needed to to split their focus to keep track of every detail of the world around them. These days, there isn't much use for that at the moment - so they label it a disorder and try to treat it.

However, exhaustion IS a symptom of depression. You should listen to your doctors on that score, they probably know what they're talking about. I know it feels like it's the other way around, like you're getting depressed because you're so tired and can never get anything done, which makes you feel lazy, which makes you feel guilty, etc. That's rationalizing, though - depression is being depressed with no real reason behind it, and you're trying to find the reason that doesn't exist. Exhaustion, along with various aches, is the physical symptom that accompanies the mental.

That does not sound like ADD/ADHD. Especially if you needed caffeine to get through the day; caffeine calms down add/adhd people and makes them tired. Do keep in mind, ADD drugs are stimulants. And stimulants can make a person feel really good and give them energy. So many people who have depression but not ADHD/ADD find that a stimulant like Ritalin and adderal can help their depression and even anxiety. Just because you don't have ADD does not mean you should stop taking the pills. That's a really stupid idea honestly. If something helps you, you should keep on taking it. It doesn't matter if you have depression but not ADD. A lot of depressed people without ADD or ADHD find that adderal helps them more than anti-depressants did. Nothing wrong with that.
