Why has this happened to me, I dont seem to have feelings like others?!

Question:

Why has this happened to me, I dont seem to have feelings like others?

Hi, I dont have feelings like I used to, I dont get upset over any family problems, nor do I worry over them anymore. While I was sad that my father just passed away a month ago, I was not crying and upset like the rest, I dont care like I used to when someone has a problem, I dont want to try to fix it or feel anything? I dont feel how I used to when I see loved ones or my grandchildren, I am happy to see them but its not how I think I was before. I hope you see what I mean and I appreciate your thoughts on this.

Answers:

Honestly? It sounds as if mentally you've stepped away from things, almost as if you've "checked out." Your emotional self right now is analogous to a bad date. Maybe you've never been on one, but the person you are with is barely listening, going through the motions, etc. That's sort of what you're going through right now! I ASSUME it's your bodies way of coping with the death of your father. It's turned inward, not wanting to hurt anymore. Because caring about others and worrying about others takes energy and effort. Maybe your mental self doesn't have the energy to give.

I would advise you to seek counseling (and I hate psychiatrists!); so, that should tell you something. I fear that you may fall into a permanent state of blocking your emotions and that's bad. You need to deal with your dad's death, not run from it. Grieving is natural. We're supposed to be said in the face of death. We're supposed to care about our loved ones. The fact that you didn't and don't are red flags. Pay attention to them!
