I think I have a problem...?!

Question:

I think I have a problem...?

I am 13, and I think I might have OCD...I have all the "symptons". Like just little ritual things, and everything I do must be done in a certain way. My mother will even ask me things like why do you do that and stuff. I am 4.0/4.0 smart, and I just feel like so acquard a lot of the times. I really do think there is the chance that I have OCD....do you know of ways that I can tell for sure???? PleasePLeasePLease help me out!!!!!!

Answers:

You may in fact have OCD, from what you explain your behaviors are. But the key is actually in the diagnosis name Obsessive, Compulsive. Obsessive meaning that your focus is on what your behavior is, you need to do the behavior and compulsive you have to do it and can not stop. You have no control over the behavior the behavior controls you. Is this the case or can you attempt to do simple things doing it a different way ? Many people with OCD can function very well as long as the behaviors do not get in the way of normal every day life. I have a friend who can not stand to see dishes or anything on the table after a meal. She will immediately get up after eating and start cleaning. She can't control it, although she has learned to be polite and wait for the rest of us to finish. We just let her do her thing, she's happy and we are happy. She also has to pick up any bit of trash she may see where she is walking, OK, she's not hurting anyone so we just let her be.
If your behaviors interfere with school and your ability to progress, or your relationships with family and friends I would ask your mom to take you to a doctor where you can be properly diagnosed and treated.
