Can you show me someone whose life WASN'T ruined by manic-depression?!

Question:

Can you show me someone whose life WASN'T ruined by manic-depression?

I want to see proof that it doesn't ruin the lives of everyone it touches. Please show me people who are or can be happy, calm, rational and lead fulfilling, normal lives while plagued with this disease.

Answers:

I have bipolar depression and I actually love my life and am very happy.
I started having depressive episodes when I was about 13 and they became more frequent and severe until 2 years ago when I sought help and was diagnosed. The thing is that all my life, I have worked to surround myself with stable, positive people. I have stayed away from drugs and drink rarely to avoid the addiction trap that many people with bipolar illness have.
I take medications and see a psychiatrist, but my symptoms have largely stablized, and although I still have some symptoms, I have a great life. I work full time and have never lost a job due to my symptoms. I graduated with honors from college. I have a husband and, ever since I got on meds, we almost never fight. I have lots of hobbies and amazing friends who are supportive.
So far I've figured out 3 things, besides therapy, that make a difference: exercise, occupation, and meditation or prayer. By occupation I don't mean a job, but you need to DO something all day rather than wallow in symptoms. Hobbies, volunteer work, whatever. Something to keep you busy, give yourself a sense of accomplishment.

I think of bipolar disorder like diabetes or asthma or any other chronic disease. You'll have it for life but you can manage your symptoms with diligence, doctors, and a good support system. Actually, I honestly think that the troubles I have lived through with my illness have strengthened my character.
