Should I be honest with my psychiatrist?!

Question:

Should I be honest with my psychiatrist?

Ok. Let me start out by saying that this is really strange and would like serious answers only.

So sometimes, well more than sometimes I have this thought in my head. It's pretty gross I guess. I somethings think about dismembering a human body. But the really strange thing is that I don't kill the person, I just see the dead body and tear it apart. I am in no way homicidal. Just really keep thinking about ripping it apart and thinking of what I could do with the singled out parts.

Now the question is should I tell my psychiatrist about that? I am in fear that they will lock me up or something. I really don't feel like I am a threat to anyone, well besides myself sometimes but thats neither here or there. And the other question is what could be causing these thoughts?

Answers:

For sure! Be honest with your psychiatrist. You cannot be locked up for thinking about something. It is not illegal to imagine things. I have no idea why you are thinking about these things, just make sure that you don't act on them or you will be spending the rest of your life being miserable in prison. Ask your psychiatrist why you are thinking these things. You can't even be put in a mental institution for just thinking about commiting a crime.
You would be asked 2 questions:
1. Do you plan on harming yourself? and,
2. Do you plan on harming someone else?
If you have plans to do it, you can be locked up.
If you are just entertaining ideas, you will remain free.
Always be honest with your doctor. You are paying him to help you. He can't help you if you aren't truthful with him.
