How do I tell my parents I want to stay in therapy?!

Question:

How do I tell my parents I want to stay in therapy?

I have been seeing a therapist I like for over a year now. However the insurance recently stopped covering my visits so whenever I go, my parents have to pay $100 (I am 14). My dad is having problems at work, and doesn't know if his company will go caput or not. I used to be really depressed and have serious problems, but went to rehab and got better. I really don't think I'm ready to come out of therapy yet. But my parents are pressuring me to finish up. I don't want them to be worried about me if I want to stay in therapy longer, like I'm a danger to myself or something because I'm not, but I also don't want to make the financial situation harder than it is. Advice?

Answers:

I really feel for you. Please talk to your therapist about the whole situation. Perhaps she/he can help you to find a financial solution. Its so sad that so many insurance policies put limits on mental health care. I don't know where you live, but in New York they recently passed a law to provide better mental health coverage. I believe that ALL health care should be completely covered for minors - including mental health and dental health. Worrying about paying is not helping your situation, I'm sure. And it shouldn't have to be an issue for you at your age.
Also talk to your parents about your concerns. Tell them that you aren't comfortable leaving therapy but you also don't want to put a financial burden on them. If they know you aren't out to spend their money on something they feel might not be necessary, it might help them to find a solution that will work for all concerned.
I am very happy to hear that you have made it through the depression and serious problems. Keep up the good work. I will keep you in my heart and pray that this all works out for you. Don't give up. You are a fighter and deserve to be happy.
