Insanity Due to a Shocking Event?!

Question:

Insanity Due to a Shocking Event?

Is it possible for someone to go insane (literally) after experiencing a life-changing and horrific event? For example, if you were stranded in a deserted area and never escape, do you think that it's possible to lose your sanity once you realize that you're never escaping? (Are you guessing or sure when you answer?)

I think that the root of insanity is your mind making up reasons to do bizarre or sick things...like twisted logic. Maybe that's why some people torture their children or mass murder. What do you guys think of insanity?

Answers:

This is a guess, but here goes....
Everyone has a breaking point. A limit to how far they will or will not go. Most people never even realize what this point is, so they never face such a difficult situation, but at times people can be pushed beyond their limit to continue thinking and acting in a rational manner.
There can be several reasons or beginnings to this road to insanity. Childhood experiences, religion, loss of coping mechanisms etc. Also I believe there is a numbing effect which comes over people where they lose feeling and emotion. They no longer care. The mind is a powerful device and is capable of doing as much good as evil. All of these factor figure in to how a person will adjust to adversity.
