hi tigglys! i like how you explain the same behavior from different groups of people... what i mean in my question is a more extreme form of facade... so many times when we get to know that extremely charming, attractive person we find out that they have a lot of issues! i was looking up marilyn monroe and i was surprised to know she had a lot of difficult behaviors on the set of one of her best movie...
but thanks for a very detailed answer :)

Answers:

I think that the reason people do it is because society is really not accepting of those with mental problems. It is true that society has become more receptive to it than it's been in the past but still it is really hard for someone with a mental problem to be a part of society without other people treating them negatively.
I think with a lot of people they don't necessarily cover it up so much at first until they do get negative reactions from people or they hear or see negative reactions directed at someone else so they hide what they're dealing with to avoid being hurt by other people. Most mental issues don't have anything to do with other people think. Granted it does depend on the person and the issue but in general I don't think that what others think is a very big issue as related to mental problems. I think it does become more of a problem after a mental issue arises.
In my opinion, mental problems arise from either chemical imbalances in the brain or emotional trauma/pain or a mix of both.
