I'm not sleeping enough...?!

Question:

I'm not sleeping enough...?

Well, it's not a matter of sleeping too much or enough or too little, but I have a problem. I go to bed at 3.00, or 4.00 AM. Then I wake up at 2.00, 2.30 PM. I don't know what's wrong with me. I can't sleep earlier, and I can't get up earlier... What should I do about this problem?

Answers:

Both my daughter and son had this same problem. In fact, my daughter is still working on it.
I recommended staying up past your usual sleep time, rather than going to bed when you usually do. Then the following night you can go to bed at a normal bedtime. Just before going to bed, drink a big glass of milk. Milk has a chemical in it that makes you sleepy.
More than likely your body will not want to fall asleep right away, even though you will be exhausted at this point, because your body has such a messed up sleep rythm already. That's okay, just lay there anyway until you fall asleep. Be sure to set an alarm clock for a normal morning wake up time, before going to bed. When it goes off in the morning make sure to get up no matter how tired you feel. You are going to have to force your body back into a normal sleep pattern.
Make sure you go to bed at the same time every night, after drinking your glass of milk, no matter how awake you feel.......and make sure to set your alarm for the morning, and get up, no matter how tired you feel.
This won't be an overnight solution, but it won't take forever either.
If you find that you cannot fall asleep at night during this transition time, after 15 minutes of lying in bed get up, leave the room, and read a book on the couch for 10 minutes Then go back to your room and try again. I told my kids to read the Bible if they are having trouble falling asleep. Even pastors have been known to fall asleep with that method....*wink*
