Answers:

I had this with my grandmother, and we had no help whatsoever as my grandmother was sent over by my uncles wife for a "holiday" and we discovered she had an open ended ticket! She did not speak English.

It is extremely difficult, but you need to remind yourself that the real person is not the one behaving in the way they do, and that they are ill. Treating it with a sense of humour is a tremendous help - Mum and I would listen to my Grandmother and stepfather talking while eating in the kitchen, we stood outside in the hall, and sometimes the things they came out with were so outrageous, we could not stop laughing. And that helped.

You need to establish a routine, ie meal times, where everything is. Unplug kettles and turn off gas when you are not able to supervise in the same room as them. Gentle reminders that say, we are all going to wash our hands now before the meal, the next thing we need to do is peel the vegetables for dinner etc. It is really up to you.

We had to be one step ahead of my Grandmother and try and work out why she was doing what she was doing and how to stop her if it was dangerous without humiliating her. For example one day, early in the morning my stepfather caught her going out the front door. My stepfather asked where she was going and she said she was going to the Central Market (in Riga, Latvia). My SF asked how she was getting there and she said number 4 tram. My SF immediately answered that the trams do not run on a Sunday and so she said, oh, I will go tomorrow. And promptly forgot.

The other thing is to try and get some "ME time"! Ask for help from sensible people, or Soc SErvices.

Must go now. Will try and and more later. All the best for now.
