Answers:

My son suffers from BPD. I remember, when he was younger, standing in court begging the judge to release him to my custody. His behavior was out of control and it was the third time I had appeared in court on his behalf. The judge looked down at me and said "I will release him to your custody again...but....if you appear in front of this court again, asking for the same permission, I will put both of you in jail." I took him home and realized how deeply the consequences of his actions had cut. Not only was I suffering the emotional upheaval of his behavior, I was facing incarceration. I had tried all kinds of therapy for him and spent many $$$ trying to get him help. I took him out of state to a specialist who started him on new medication. I had no idea that he was being non-compliant and lying about taking the medication. When we returned home it wasn't long before he got in trouble again. This time he was sent to jail. The most difficult thing for me was to ignore his calls and not do anything to help him. When he got out he was more angry than ever. He blamed me for all of his problems (that is part of the disease). We went back to another doctor. This one was a psychopharmacologist. He explained to me that it was not his purpose to try to find out "why" my son acted the way he did but to treat him for the behavior. He put him on new medication. Apparently the stint in jail scared him enough that he began taking the medication the way he was instructed. My son graduated from Florida International University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. He still has BPD but he has researched the disease and knows more about it than most people. He also knows why it is so important for him to take medication. Not everyone has a happy ending....generally because the patient is resistant to therapy and non-compliant with meds. best wishes
