I think I'm depressed. What should I do?!

Question:

I think I'm depressed. What should I do?

I haven't left the house in a week. I have no energy. I sleep 12-14 hours a day. when I'm up, all I want to do is eat, which is counterproductive to my goal of losing weight, which just depresses me more. I have no money, I'm in school, but I'll probably flunk out soon if I don't get some motivation to actually go there. I have very few friends. I'm already on Lexapro, but it doesn't seem to be helping. Oh, and I figured out how I want to kill myself; I'll take a whole bottle of pills. I'm not into the whole pain thing. I don't really want to die though, I'm just having suicidal thoughts. Please help.

Answers:

You should talk to a counsellor as well as your prescribing doctor. Pills alone are not the answer to curing depression. It's also important that you seek out therapy. Since you are in school, I'm going to assume it's a college, you should go to your student counselling centre. Most universities have psychologists on staff to help students deal with the stresses of college life.

Having suicidal thoughts is rather common especially in depressed people. If you know you are not going to act on it, it's going to be okay. You can mention it to your doctor, but don't make a big deal about it or they'll lock you up. Don't tell them you know how you would do it, just that you think about it, but never would. I would like to say that overdosing is not painless, unless you overdose on opiates but then you'll throw up a lot more than a usual overdose. I overdosed on Trazodone. It's antidepressant medication given to help with sleeping issues. Anyways, I vomited with such force I peed myself! Not fun and if you fail at it, you may end up in the psych ward. It's an awful place to go. I was lucky in that my husband didn't get me locked up. He's been locked up, he knows it's terrible!!
