How would I tell if I had postnatal pschosis, depression or post tramatic stress!

Question:

How would I tell if I had postnatal pschosis, depression or post tramatic stress disorder?

The mental health nurse has referred me on to someone else, and I'm on sertraline, which seems to be helping as well as support from the health visitor and surestart, but I want to know whats up with me now!

I had a very tramatic birth and I keep having flashbacks, but I'm also hearing and seeing things, although I don't know if maybe thats just tiredness. I'm having such vivid dreams that I really can't work out if they are true or not and have to ask people if stuff happened. I've also been self harming and obsessing over ways that me or my baby might die or get harmed, and I can't relax whenever Im alone with her in case something bad happens. I've also got a bit obsessed with my joints (that they could go wrong) or that I might have to go to hospital for something and I examine every little twinge to see if it's a serious illness. The nurse today also said that it's not normal to keep waking up to check for burglers and hearing the baby cry when shes not. Also I'm wondering now if I could maybe be being a bit paranoid about all the people that are spreading rumours about me and trying to split up me and my boyfriend or get the baby taken away.

Answers:

PTSD symptoms are:

hypervigilence, or a startled reaction to being surprised, or a very strong reaction to anything you werent expecting

sleeplessness or restless sleep

living with reoccuring images of a situation

social withdrawal, and there are other symptoms I am forgetting.

stress, anxiety, depression are all offshoots and part and parcel of PTSD, they can be separate issues in themselves and you may not have PTSD.

PTSD is a very overused term by people that think it doesnt exist and want to slam others that have it. In your heart, you would know if there are reasons for you to have it and if so, address them by seeing a PTSD specialist.

I wish you sincere luck and encourage you find the right person or medical specialists to help you. Many of us out here have it and care how you feel and want you to succeed.

Wishing you the very very best...
