Did psych meds help you when you needed them?!

Question:

Did psych meds help you when you needed them?

anyone? i'm "bipolar" according to my doctor. i've been put on medication and it's helping me a lot. what i want to know is if i were to lower my dosage and eventually stop, how will it make me feel? will the effects of my bipolar disorder hit me so hard that i will become suicidal? just a thought? how did you people who took psych meds who are now NOT taking psych meds handle it. why stop taking? it's not something plan to do, but in the future, should me and my doctor decide to have me stop, how will it make me feel?

Answers:

I am bipolar too, but really I swing between "normal" and manic. I have been on so many medications and nothing seemed to really control me. My husband and I decided to have a child, so last year, I began lowering all of my dosages until I was finally able to cease all of them. I was on, among other meds, Klonopin for several years. That was hell during withdrawal. The first month or so, all of my senses were heightened and my anxiety escalated into paranoia. After the withdrawal period eased, I actually enjoyed things more. It seemed as though I am able to feel more and see more now than when I was on the medications.

I've found that one thing that helps me cope with my mood swings is to see a talk therapist. Between that doctor and my actual psychiatrist, my moods and levels are constantly monitored. I know that I may not be able to stay off of medications for the rest of my life, but it is nice to not worry about them for the time being. Good luck!

edited to add: I only lowered my medications with the help of my doctors. I am constantly monitored and under the care of several medical professionals. I must agree with everyone else to not wean off of your meds by yourself.
