Can't focus on anything?!

Question:

Can't focus on anything?

Sometimes, when I'm laying down to go to sleep, usually late at night, I get to thinking so much that it all seems to run together and I can't focus on anything and get this sense of total inability to think. It almost feels like I'm thinking about multiple things at once, simultaneously, but my mind can't pick one to actively think about.
This is without using drugs. After I realize that it's happening, I try to focus on simple things, like reading the title of a book on the nightstand, or turning on the tv and focusing on it for a little bit. After this, it usually subsides and I can think again (usually in about 5 minutes), but I'm curious if this is normal? What could be happening?
