Why at age 58 do I wonder what I'm going to be when I grow up?!

Question:

Why at age 58 do I wonder what I'm going to be when I grow up?

I''ve been married to the same man for 38 years, have four sons and had a "career" doing medical transcription from my home. I quit my job due to burnout and nearly caused financial ruin. Now, I am lonely and bored and without any skills or the desire to get a job. We live in a rural area, and I am afraid to even drive somewhere due to the cost of gas. I reject friendships as too demanding and time consuming (huh?). I hope to have a long life, but doing what. I am unwilling to commit to volunteerism as it would require a commitment. What the heck is wrong with me.

Hi,

i think you have answered this question yourself, you are afraid of commitment. your title and what you wrote don't seem to match up very well.

From the initial question, i was thinking the problem maybe that you don't feel you achieved what you wanted out of life and i do see some connection between that and the bulk of what you wrote. You are still thinking in that dreamy way a child does..what could i be, where could i go, what could I do...and that's great because it shows ambition and if you have dreams, no matter if you 5 years old or 58 years old you should go for them

however,

it sounds like you have other issues, guilt from leavinga job that was not good for you and for possibily making money situations slightly more hard and so you don't feel you deserve anything that asks to much of you or your family. I think you need to talk to your family about this and how you feel, you shouldn't feel guilty for quitting due to burnout, you didn't just give up! It sounds like your self esteem and confidence has been run down and you are afraid to commit to anything...i think you need to confide these issues in your family or else see a counsellor and ask for their advice. counselling isnt for people who only have major problems, worries or concerns are enough. it sounds like your developing anxiety issues and i wouldnt like to see this get worse for you!

perhaps print of this question and take it to your gp!

best of luck!
