Experiences with mental health professionals?!

Question:

Experiences with mental health professionals?

Just wondering, is it a common experience to seek professional mental health treatment only to find that the people you see are apathetic, unhelpful and basically going through the motions so they can collect their paycheck?

I've been dealing with some sort of lifelong problem which I'm guessing could be anything from ADHD to autism to schizophrenia or any other possibilities. But when I tried to get a diagnosis of any sort from the doctors I saw, they would only prescribe me meds for depression and anxiety, which were clearly symptoms and not the primary problem. Beyond that, their attitude was, "not my job and not my concern."

Has anyone else come across this attitude when they've seeked mental health assistance?

Answers:

yes. That's why you have to be VERY assertive about what you want.

If you don't want meds, stay away from psychiatrists. They get paid by the prescription (so it seems.)

Stick with counselors, social workers, LCSW's, and the like.

Good luck!
