Should I continue taking Citalopram (SSRI) when it made me feel sick?!

Question:

Should I continue taking Citalopram (SSRI) when it made me feel sick?

I took Citalopram for the first time last night. It made me feel very sick all night (I vomited) and I couldn't go to sleep until 5 in the morning. I know that these are common side effects and that they're meant to lessen with time but I really don't want to feel like this for several weeks. I can't speak to my doctor until next week, so I can't ask her if I should take another pill tonight or not.

Have any of you taken Citalopram before? What's your advice?

Answers:

Citalopram is a slow release anti depressant and can cause a number of side effects including nausea, dizziness and insomnia.

It is important to only ingest the prescribed dose as there have been cases where people have overdosed and died from over consumption of Citalopram due to them trying to increase the 'effectiveness' of the drug.

I would suggest you continue with the prescribed dose and return to your doctor after 14 days if you are still suffering these side effects. It can take up to 14 days for the drug to affect your symptoms and for your body to adjust so perhaps just give it some time..

Best of Luck
