Help for daughters of women with anorexia\?!

Question:

Help for daughters of women with anorexia\?

my niece is almost 13, her mother past 4 years ago. She is visiting from out of state. Sometimes she seems very sad. she has mentioned her wieght a little to often for my liking. she eats well although if she lost a pound I would be scared. She has nooooo meat on her bones as it is. She has no mother figure at home and xpends alot of time by herself. It worries me to send her home to a not very open father and a teenage brother. I know they love her very much, I wonder how much they really know her thoughts or feelings. If her wieght is brought up, she quickly says she's fine. I just want to wrap her up with love, make her feel safe to share her feelings and take care of her. What's an aunt to do?

Answers:

Take her to a physician if her weight changes or you notice any changes in her eating habits. If she keeps mentioning her weight try to arrange an appointment with a therapist or psychologist (if you're her legal guardian you can, if you're not, contact her legal guardian about this). Other than that, she probably will refuse love that you try to show even though she may be dying to accept it. Try to show that you love her, be interested in her and her life and her interests, make sure she doesn't spend a lot of time alone, and be a good example of a healthy body image and proper eating and nutritional habits.
