20/20 or Dateline on Anxiety. please help?!

Question:

20/20 or Dateline on Anxiety. please help?

okay i remember seeing an episode in the past year on one of those shows, im not sure which it was. whichever one it was, it was on on a friday night. it was following people with Anxiety disorder, or GAD, and i think it might have been two different girls that had it. i know the one had to go to new york and she was scared to fly, and she was scared to go in a taxi beacuse she saw a scary movie about it. can anyone tell me which show it was on and if there is anyway i can go to the website and purchase that website. i too am suffering from GAD, and my dad doesnt understand it at all. i would love for him to watch it so he can get a better understanding of what it's like. please help me. thanks.

Answers:

dear Britt...........this probably would be a good way to get your dad to understand this terrible disease. Chronic anxiety creates a very very painful existence. I suffered all of my young life with it and, as usual, it resulted in severe depression. During my childhood my complaints were dismissed and I was labeled a troubled kid. People just didn't seem to understand that I was suffering from an disease of organic brain chemistry. It would have been much easier if I had diabetes or some other physical condition. I would have gotten sympathy and immediate treatment. There are lots of resources on the web that you can go to and print out for your dad. Talk to a school counselor and try to get referred to a therapist. Your dad could go with you also and they will explain more about this condition to him. Nowadays clinicians are much more educated about anxiety and depression and it is not stigmatized as much as it was in the past. I grew up with it. When I look back I'm not sure how I made it so far in life. I take medication now and have controlled my anxiety and panic attacks. I got over the fears that controlled my life. Unfortunately I hit rock bottom before I got the appropriate treatment. My story can be found on Yahoo search under "The Last Temptation of George Petrie" if you are interested in reading about my downward spiral. I wish you the very best and hope that you will get treatment for what is a relatively easy condition to treat.
