Since I have a mental illness, is it MANDATORY that I do these things?!

Question:

Since I have a mental illness, is it MANDATORY that I do these things?

Take medicine, see a psychiatrist, & have a case manager/social worker? Why? & if I don't take my medicine, they make threats to have me mentally hospitalized. But I see plenty of Bi-Polar people with jobs & don't have to see a Dr. or take meds. I'm not Bi-Polar. I have OCD, Tourette's Syndrome, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, & Major Depressive Disorder. But they say Bi-Polar is more serious. People demand that I see a psychiatrist & take meds, but when I shop around for a psych., they're hard to find because they say I'm not mentally ill enough or that my mental illnesses aren't serious enough.

& it really hurts me when people say "Go take your medicine, you crazy bltch!" Or when they say "You need some help really quick!"

I feel really depressed & medicine is just nothing but poison.

I'm 23 & should be able to make decisions for myself. I should have the right not to see a psychiatrist, take meds, nor have a case manager if I don't want to. I should be able to live by choice. I haven't harmed anyone.

Answers:

OCD, Tourette's Syndrome, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, & Major Depressive Disorder? Wow thats a lot of stuff to deal with . Don't feel like you 'should' be able to make decisions since you are an adult. You have obviulsy made the decision to seek help. Good on you!!! NEVER listen to anybody that says things that you mentioned. They have NO idea what having a mental illness is like for you. If you are over 18 then olnly a court order can force you to see a counsellor etc But having support is vital for anybody. All those things can help make life better so dont discount them without trying some first. Finding a counsellor that you like is essential!! You are paying for their services so feel free to shop around until you find one that you trust. Good luck with that!!
