"but it's the best educated guess that we currently have. "

Is that why so many people currently throw these terms around like they are just another word and something to politically assassinate another person with? You gave a good answer it is far from scientific you are right and thank you.

"It is not subjective it is based on more than 200 hundred years of research and practice and yet it is not flawless and this system is in its infancy."

He said she said I might say is a little subjective isn't it? If it has been going for over 200 years and it is still in its infancey then how many more years will it take for it to be fully developed. Let's compare that to 20% of 100 that means in 800 more years you think it will be any better?

"Over 1000 people took part in putting together the DSM-IV, the current version. The purpose was to find a common language, so that mental health professionals could be on the same page whenever they needed to work together to help someone."

Since you say that you are a mental health professional, do you believe that this is just another text book that some people have political power to sit and agree or disagree about what goes in and out of it? That the truth is that they never really know what to put in it and take out of it? That since it is subjective and not individual and that it doesn't really describe the true nature of what is going on so that can be changed that it is just another book like the bible that gives some rough reference for how to bill the insurance company so that someone can get paid? Have you ever heard of Paula Caplan?

Answers:

Psychology is far from a definate science. The DSM isn't exactly fact, but it's the best educated guess that we currently have.
