Schizoaffective Disorder?!

Question:

Schizoaffective Disorder?

I have been diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder and since i was a teen have not been able to hold a job more than 3 months. not that im lazy or anything but i realized just recently what it was with the help of a psychiatrist. I was wondering if this disorder is one that qualifies me as Mentally Disabled and able to receive SS checks? I have looked at the 4 parts of daily functioning and fit into all of those, so i think i am qualified, also any help in proving my validity would be nice, i know family members writing in helps but thats about all i know.

Answers:

You'll probably want to contact your local Social Security Office. As you have a work history, you might receive SSDI (for people who have worked and paid taxes, etc.) instead of SSI, which is for people who have never worked in their lives, due to disability. As a former mental health case manager, I sincerely hope you are eligible for SSDI. SSI is scarcely enough to live on, although you are eligible for Medicaid and Section XIII housing.

Good luck! They rarely grant disability the first time. Be prepared to fight the good fight.
