Should I consider hospitalization to deal with my depression (possible bipolar d!

Question:

Should I consider hospitalization to deal with my depression (possible bipolar disorder)?

I've recently experienced a MAJOR break up. Not only did I lose my "life partner" but I lost my best friend (the best I had ever had too). It sent me spiraling into a deep depression. I felt suicidal at first but now I'm past that. I just have no motivation or desire to do anything. I just feel sick. I think I might be bipolar and my family agrees. I keep crying because I just don't know what to do with myself. One minute I am fine and up and doing stuff and then I start to cry and lay back down. I just don't know what to do. I know that if I go to the hospital tonight, it won't do any immediate help because it's in the middle of the night, but I am not sure if I should consider it for tomorrow.

You have to have friends in order to have them around. Also, my mom just got in a fight with me saying that medicine is a crutch and that getting a job will help. She doesn't understand mental illness at all.

Answers:

Have you been to see your primary care physician already? If not, you should do so as soon as possible, whether or not you decide to go to the hospital. They will probably prescibe some medication that will help you get through your difficult time. Or, if it's something you need to stay on for longer term, that's fine too. If you are bi-polar you will benefit so much from a diagnosis! Even if you aren't and are just suffering from depression, you will benefit a lot from getting a diagnosis and treatment.
I think if you are feeling suicidal at all you should go to the hospital. You might want to call a mental health help line to get some advice from them on what to do. The National Mental Health Institute has a toll-free number for this: 1-800-273-TALK for immediate help.
Please don't worry if you have to try different medications/treatments before you get results. Keep with it. Sometimes it's difficult to find the answer that is best for you personally. I think a lot of people get discouraged and give up before they find their solution, but keep trying things that could improve things.
Take care.
