Mental Issues?!

Question:

Mental Issues?

I am afraid of the dark. I have been since I was 6. If I'm alone in a dark room I start hyperventilating and crying. I'm extremely paranoid before I go to sleep. I think that spiders are gonna crawl out from under my pillow so I have to pat my head repeatedly to feel for them. I cant sleep in total darkness because I think that someone is lurking in my room. If I'm alone I always have to check behind me because someone could be walking behind me. I have strange urges to do stupid things. I stepped on a mirror in my room. It broke into two pieces. I saw it and wanted to take one of the pieces and cut myself. I tried to resist it because I knew it was stupid. I'm not depressed. I ended up taking the shard and sliding it across my left wrist. It ended up looking like a cat scratch so my parents didn't notice much. I felt extremely guilty afterward. When I was about seven I had an issue with scissors. If I looked at them I had an image of me slitting my throat open. It scared me.

Answers:

You have a few more problems than just being afraid of the dark and I think if you sat down and thought about them you would find the reason why. Things happen to us when we are growing up that affect us as adults and we don't know why. You may have been locked in a dark room or told stories that scared you about monsters in the dark etc.
You may not think you are depressed but there are many different symptoms and not everyone is the same. Thinking about harming yourself is a sign that you are in need of help. you may be able to control it now but it may not be so easy in the future. You hurt yourself as a way to get attention and sympathy. There are medications that can help you . Talk to your Dr. and tell him what you are thinking he can help.
