They say the same things that help babies sleep can be the same for adults.

You should start off your night well by doing relaxing things before you go to sleep. Some people find that reading is relaxing, but for me personally, it's more stimulating, so I avoid that. A nice shower can do the trick to help me relax, but above all else I just try not to do really stimulating things before bedtime. That means no tv for at least a half an hour before I go to sleep, no caffiene, no cigarettes, no computer. Just developing a good bedtime routine can help you fall asleep easier. Maintaining a regular sleep schedule can also help you fall asleep easier and stay asleep longer.

If you're already doing all these things and still having trouble sleeping, you might find some relief from getting out of bed and doing something (not too stimulating.) Lying there, tossing and turning and looking at the clock can be stressful, and just compound the problem. Try to find something you like doing that doesn't get your brain going too much.

Also, try to identify why you're awake... is your mind racing with thoughts from the day? If so, try writing them down, writing down how they're done, or they will be done, finished, gone away, or whatever else applies.

If all else fails, call the doctor. They can prescribe sleeping pills for you that will at LEAST get you through the night if it's an ongoing problem.
