My monitor at work tilts 1mm and I can't handle that!?!

Question:

My monitor at work tilts 1mm and I can't handle that!?

At work I really need to switch to a larger monitor - but I refuse to do that. I measured it and there is a right-left height difference of about 1-2 mm. Yes, I know it sounds crazy- What is 1 mm?

The thing is I just don't think there should be any tilt at all in the monitor- it just drives me crazy. I don't realy know what to do. If I go to my boss and ask for a new monitor because of a 1 mm tilt I think she will most definitely laugh and think I'm crazy!

What should I do? My head is just mixed up. Should I tell the others at work that I have problems with obsessions?

I've tried puting paper under one side of the monitor base to remove the tilt- but for some reason it just doesn't seem to work - In my head I'm constantly wonder if there is still a tilt or not.

Ohhhh... That prozac needs to start doing it's work!
What should I do?

Answers:

Maybe first you should try to use something a little thicker than paper to try to tilt it. Maybe a peice of cardboard? It may also be a good idea to talk to your boss about what you are going through. Is she an understanding person? If she knows what kind of worker you are, and if your condition is not affecting the quality of your work any, it should not change her image of you at all. Most (good) employers try to do everything they can to ensure how comfortable their employees are, especially if you are a good employee and are well respected there. If she understood what you go through, she should be willing to work with you, and do what she could to help you out in these situations.

The main thing is, though, try not to focus on it. I know that sounds like too simple of an answer, but there is a way to "trick our minds." An example is the way a child will be crying like crazy when they get a small cut. But the minute mom puts a band-aid on it, it all suddenly gets better. (even though that band-aid did nothing to take the pain away.) It is a mental thing to them. And our minds can be so easily influenced, that we even have the ability to do that to ourselves.

Put something underneath the base of the monitor to fix it, and be satisfied that it has been fixed. Try not to focus on whether or not it actually HAS been fixed or not, just be satisfied that it has. Then try to shift your focus to something else. The more we focus on something, the more agitating it will get. Like if I focused on the fact that my kitchen rug is a little crooked at this moment, the more and more I stared at it, the more and more I would get agitated by it. Eventually it would be all that I was thinking about, and nothing else could be done until I went over there and fixed the stupid thing. But I am not focusing on it. I am focusing on answering your question. Right now the crooked rug is very minor. And if you think about it, it IS very minor. If someone came over, would they think any less of me because my rug was crooked? No. Should the small tilt in your monitor affect your happiness to this degree? No, it shouldn't. I used to nitpick things to no end (my major thing was cleanliness and organization), but after I started having kids, I was pretty much forced into the fact that perfection with everything is impossible sometimes. I had to learn to let some things go, so that I had the ability to focus on what was more important at the moment, taking care of my kids. And it does get easier. The more you practice at just letting some things go, the more you will be able to do it at will. Try to shift your focus onto something different. The thing is though, it has to be of greater importance to you than this problem, for it to take your mind off of it. Something that is much more intriguing than the small tilt in your monitor. Try to get engulfed in your current assignment at work, or try to think about something that has recently caught your interest. Something to get your mind off of that, and to make it seem minor again.

But good luck. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. I'm wishing you the best. :)
