How can I get an individual recognised as having Boderline Personality Disorder !

Question:

How can I get an individual recognised as having Boderline Personality Disorder even when they do not want to?

My ex partner has BPD. She thinks there is nothing wrong but she ticks 7 out of the 8 boxes. I need to get her some help for her sake and the kids. How can I get a professional to recognise the problem when she will not openly admit she has a problem. Deep down she knows she has and has told me on several occasions but she will not seek any help.

Answers:

If she cares about your kids together, the most effective strategy may be to help her see how her behavior is effecting the kids. Do not try and convince her of the diagnosis as she may well become even more resistant and simply try and prove you wrong. It's doubtful that your insight will be appreciated at any rate, but perhaps she may seek help or at the least modify her behavior if she is able to recognize its impact on those she loves, ie her kids. I would suggest that you even avoid suggestions that she seek therapy or how she can change her behavior as it is likely to kick up more resistance from her and be counterproductive to your goals. Instead focus on giving her feedback only on how her behavior impacts the kids in as neutral a way as possible-only if she begins to recognize the issues herself will she be likely to get help or begin to alter her behavior, otherwise it will only evolve into a control battle which will damage everyone further.
