More about my gf?!

Question:

More about my gf?

further to yesterday's questions you can see in my profile about my gf, i talked to her about cutting and back in the days when she did it when she was 15, she did end up telling her parents and seeing somebody about it, she pretty much stopped for a couple of years because it upset them, but now she's sick of that and she just does it occasionally because she likes it. therapy didn't work because she didn't seem to havec any underlying issues. so what to do???

no she's not doing it for attention...her scars are in very hidden places and I don't think many people know about it. she also doesn't get off on it...she's not actually into that sort of thing either. she is very sensible about it which is why I think I don't have to do anything. she is like an expert on when to stop, disinfecting and closing wounds and all that. she has a great social life and is doing well at college.

Answers:

The cutting makes her feel in control of herself, empowered. She relates the cutting to positiveness (sic). This is further backed up coz the only reason she stopped last time was for her parents sake - not her own. Make sense? :-)

I used to be a cutter, and although it's tempting to do it again when I'm really, really, really down - I refrain from doing so because I associate cutting with bad experiences (as I was admitted to hospital, voluntarily for a 'rest', and it complicated my work life slightly) so that to me is bad.

On the other hand - it could be for attention seeking? Not knowing anything else other than what you've written in the question I'm not sure about this.

You must explain to her the bad reasons - what could happen if she continues her behaviour. Does she work? Could it affect her work credibility? Any hobbies that could be affected by it. Maybe check out some 'survivor' stories about the behaviour for further guidance. Good luck and you have my respect for sticking with her during this - many guys would have run a mile by now!
