Can an atheist benefit from a 12-Step program?!

Question:

Can an atheist benefit from a 12-Step program?

Why or why not?

Answers:

Its very hard, there are so many religious undertones I ended up leaving the group.

I believe this is also why so many people are in and out of 12 step programs. You need to learn that you are the cause and that you are the solution to everything you are doing to yourself. That is the true cure. These programs would be better if they taught personal responsibility instead of leaning on god.

(somebody made a comment above that 12 step programs allow you to believe in your own personal idea of god, but remember the group will be conducted according to the people who are in it, and if THEY believe in the Christian god then those will be the undertones).
