My son is 5yrs 6mths & has high functioning Autism & Adhd, consultant re!

Question:

My son is 5yrs 6mths & has high functioning Autism & Adhd, consultant reluctant to medicate until he`s 6yrs?

even though a review of his statement for SEN clearly states "major behavioural issues, inattention, and inability to work in small groups for 5 minutes, and cannot wait his turn in line". Along with this he is extremely impulsive, aggressive, verbally abusive, kicks and destroys everything. I am a single parent with another son of 9yrs, who cannot bare to be in the same room as him. His behaviour is significantly worse when out with me in public, i trapped a nerve and slipped a disc prizing them apart last week! Another 6mths of this situation seems unbearable. Any suggestions Please

I would have to say, drugging a child should always be the last option. You don't say where you're based but I am going assume by your spelling it is the UK.

As far as I can see you have six months to turn this around and it won't be easy. Get some help, some respite care to begin with, having a child with any disability is tough and you should not feel the need to suffer alone in silence. The social services are there to help with this, as well as putting you in touch with some support groups.

How about a one-to-one teaching aide? approach the school and see if they can help your son reach his potential.

ADHD can be a diet based problem, now I am not pointing a finger of blame, I would never judge not my place. Processed foods in todays diets are blamed for much of this, too much tv and not enough exercise too. Test that theory get your boys out running around as much as possible and try as much as possible to replace sugar based snack and drinks with more healthy options.

ADHD is also about boredom and keeping the child occupied for as long as possible, I know that this can be tough, time consuming and tiring, so get as much help as you can.

Aggression is hard to deal with in anybody, let alone a child and please remember this little boy has many problems, he may be high functioning but he is still austic, the world to him is completely different to our world. Maybe he needs a little help in expressing himself.

Austism and ADHD children benefit from routine (as you probably know) and changes to this routine will upset the child, so it is important to devise a routine that is easy to stick to, so your son knows what is to come.

I would take these six months to see whether anything else works, medication is the last resort and only hide the symptoms without really treating them, then it is a lifelong treatment, whereas maybe another solution in years to come will mean your son himself can manage his own conditions without becoming resentful of constant medication that may prevent him leading a normal life.

I hope this helps and that you find a solution to your dilema
