Sleep paralysis causes and effects?!

Question:

Sleep paralysis causes and effects?

At times I go through this very scary episodes which I think is sleep paralysis.

It's an experience where I have woken up but I cannot move a muscle. At times it also feels as though something heavy is on top of you or something is crushing your head or you are choking or whatever else. Occasionally during these episodes I have also seen abnormal things which I don't know whether they were dreams or I was hallucinating.

Nevertheless it's a very scary experience. and they happen once in a while.

Are the symptoms I described in line with sleep paralysis?(usually a combination of what I mentioned happens together)

What are the causes of these episodes of sleep paralysis? How can I avoid them in future? How dangerous are they when they happen? Could they be caused be stress or lack of sleep?

Answers:

it sounds like sleep paralysis to me and I know exactly what its like. there is a number of different reasons for it. I used to get it a lot when I was a teenager for 2 reasons one being stress of school exams the other being hormones. Now I don't get it that often but if there is an imbalance in my hormones such as I get pregnant it will start up again until my body has adjusted to the hormone change (I have 4 children all very young) most people think that sleep paralysis is a mental health problem but its actually a recognized medical condition. It is very hard to avoid having an episode but I can recommend when they are happening to stay very relaxed no matter what you see (I know that can be a real freak out stuff) the more relaxed you stay the fast the episode will pass. see your doctor there maybe more he can do for you. the link below may tell you a little more about it. in years gone by they used to say that it was a demon (incubus) that was sitting on you or the old nag
