Need advice re: family member with Bipolar?!

Question:

Need advice re: family member with Bipolar?

My brother is 31 years old. I know he has post traumatic stress disorder and a couple of years ago he was diagnosed with depression and bi-polar. He rarely has good days. He's always secluded. It's like walking on egg shells when he's around. I'm 21 I have accomplished alot for my age. My brother always puts me down. Whenever he walks into a room, I walk out. I know he is ill and I know not to take his comments personal. I grew up with him threatening me verbaly and sometimes physically. He has to control everything. He controls my mother as well. He refuses to take medication! My mother is old and she wants me to care for him when she passes away. I can't take care of him, what do I do what are my options??

Answers:

don't let him get to you - I know it is hard

I am bipolar & yes I know how it is to be in the place your brother is, but right now TOUGH LOVE sounds like the best solution -- if he can't be civil then why should you subject yourself to him -- being bipolar is NO excuse, many accomplished people have lead fruitful lives with the illness

my advice would be to get him into some kind of treatment -- involuntary or not, a visit to the nut house just to see what life can be like did it for me, this may be a good option -- without taking meds he is not going to improve, ever

as for taking care of him after your mother passes, that is an unfair burden she is asking, don't fall for it, he is not your responsibility, you do not owe him your adulthood

take care of yourself and be happy - let your brother take care of himself, bipolar people are very intellegent he will get the message and eventually do the right thing
