Sleep disorder?!

Question:

Sleep disorder?

I am trying to figure out what exactly is wrong with a roomate of mine. People believe it is merely a case of sleepwalking but I believe it is something more, a little closer to sleep terror. She will wake up in the middle of the night, sit up and just yell out things such as "why is it damp in here!" meanwhile it is perfectly fine. the last time they did this was actually frightening. She burt out of bed, slapping her arm saying her elbow was missing and calling out the name of one of her family members. After going into the bathroom to splash water on her "missing elbow" she went back to bed and instantly fell back asleep. I know this all sounds crazy, but does anyone know what this could be. She has also been on ritalin a good portion of her life, so maybe this could be a long term side effect of the drug?

Answers:

Actually, you are very perceptive and probably sensitive too.
What your roommate is experiencing is not normal. I would suggest that you have your roommate get an assessment from a sleep disorder specialist. The cause could be past abuse, medication side effects, or a sleep disorder. Proper assessment needs to be made before proper treatment can be offered.
