I have depression, how do I force my self to get help?!
Question:
I have depression, how do I force my self to get help?
I have never been officially diagnosed but I know without a doubt I have depression. I have never spoken to a doctor about it but I have taken depression tests online and they always come back moderate - severe deprestion. I have had reoccuring problems with it for a few years now but I have always been too scared to talk about it with anyone because whenever I would bring it up with my family they would treat me like I was just making it up.
Now I am married and have been able to talk about it with my husband. We both know I need to get help but I can't seem to make myself see a doctor. My husband has even offered to go with me but I never make the appointment because I am so afriad that they are going to laugh in my face like my family did. And every time it gets really bad I vow to see the doctor but then it gets better for a while so I tell my self I don't need to go.
Has anyone else had this problem? I need advice on how to get over these fears and where to go for help.
Answers:
Well it's perfectly normal to be distrustful after your families behavior, but you're PAYING someone to be there for you. They have to be. ; )
Sometimes it's hit or miss finding the therapist you like best. But you need to go in w/ an open mind. Taking the step to go to your first appointment is such a strong courageous step & it needs to be done s you can heal.
You have a very supportive husband. Take advantage of his offer & let him come, or at least drive you if you don't want him in the room.
Depression is scary b/c you feel so alone. But you're not, there are SO many who are & there are SO many licensed to help you through it. The resources are there, all you need is to reach out.
Start with your healthcare (online locate a doc feature) or go to your GP for a reference - you can do it.
