How do I go about getting out the house more?!

Question:

How do I go about getting out the house more?

I just turned 17 a month ago & it still seems nothing in my life has changed. My old friends (aren't friends anymore) have found jobs already and it seems are moving forward in their lives while I'm just standing still. School has never really been a problem for me so I'm not worrying about college, but other things like actually attempting to learn to drive and going out to search for a job. Now that it's summer Iv'e been doing nothing but sitting behind this computer. I only come out once or twice in a week but only because I have to. I really hate going out the house and get nervous around a lot of people in public places. I would really like to get job, just find a way to meet new people, & get my life moving a little faster. Right now my summer is wasting away so I'd to know if their is any quick solution to my social anxiety. Also I'd like to know reasons to go out... only things that come to mind now would be for work and shopping, but I know there're more things to do than that

Answers:

I have a few suggestions although you might not like them, even though they are based on experience. I would first see a psychiatrist about your anxiety and go on medication if you need it. Then I would follow up with a psychologist who can help you change your thinking and help you. What's the easy answer to getting out of the house more? Get out of the house and think positive. NOT! If it's not as simple as getting out of the house and thinking positive, then obviously you need help.

There is a psychological tool that you can use that will help once medication helps you. And that is to stand outside and just stand outside. Don't go anywhere. Just stand. Then gradually walk 100 feet and come back. Then gradually go further until you are comfortable. What you're doing is going beyond medication. You're changing the way you feel by changing the way you think. Good luck and GOD bless!
