How to deal with bipolar boyfriend who won't take medication or get help?!

Question:

How to deal with bipolar boyfriend who won't take medication or get help?

my boyfriend who is 26 was diagnosed when he was 18 as a manic bipolar. he did take meds then but no longer does. since i have been with him for 4 years he has never taken meds.we also have a 2 year old daughter. i think that he needs to get medical help again, his mother agrees as well but he is so hard to talk to. he does not listen and thinks i am trying to be controlling. he can be in a really good mood and seem fine for awhile then he gets in this mood where he says hurtful and mean things to me and our daughter, he has no patience for either of us when he is like this. i try to talk to him nicely and figure out what i can do to help but he just gets mad. i could really use some advice from anyone who has gone through a similar experience. somedays i don't know if i can live like this, he can't seem to hold a job either, this is the second time in two years where he has quit his job and does not find a new for 1-2 months. i feel like may daughter and i suffer as well, any advice?

Answers:

If he is in the manic phase he will not listen to you because he feels fine. This might be a good time to go on vacation for about a month or more. When he is in normal or depressed phase talk to him about monitoring his meds and get his cooperation with charting his phases. Also, see if you can get him into some therapy besides meds, but not if he is manic, he will not want to hear it until he is out of the manic phase.
