I am not grouping all people with Bipolar as mean. But my daughter has suffered from bipolar for almost 20 years. And this past weekend, she became very mean to me and I have always been there when she had no one else.

I also am a nurse, so I know alot about mental illness. Fighting depression all my life also helps. I just wanted some fresh input.

Answers:

My sister in law, also my friend, is bi polar and when she goes off her meds and becomes manic, she also gets mean. It is the illness and in that state she becomes delusional. She thinks she knows all the answers and me and everyone else around her are idiots. She has no problem attacking us verbally, and is very cutting and cruel. She swears at us, won't listen to any of us, like you say, who are trying to help her.
It hurts, I know, but I remind myself it is the illness talking and not my good friend. It sounds horrible, but when she gets like this, at least I know she has gone off her meds, and I would not know otherwise, as she lies about it.
This woman, when on her meds, is the sweetest woman a person would want to know. It is very hard when she turns on me and is mean and vindictive, but as I care about her and value her friendship I look past that. I know she doesn't really know what she is saying or doing when she is, what I call, in her illness. As well, when she is manic and mean, I know the crash (depression) is coming, and that is when she really needs all of us who love her to be there for her and not desert her in her hour of need.
Try not to take it too much to heart when the individual you know is treating you poorly, it is a part of an illness they did not bring upon themselves. It is a terrible disorder and from all I have read there is some sort of allure about the manic state that many find hard to resist and thus the reason they will go off their meds. It is not easy to understand and I well know the frustration involved. Good luck to you.
